Most of the decision comes down to three lines.
Market and payments settle it before design or price ever does. Read the one that matches your store and you already have your answer.
You are a UAE or GCC brand selling in English or internationally and you want a bespoke, custom-designed storefront.
You are a Saudi or GCC brand and you need mada, Tabby, Tamara, Apple Pay, Arabic, and ZATCA working out of the box.
You run retail in Saudi Arabia and you need point-of-sale and omnichannel tied to the online store.
The comparison, row by row.
Every cell here is drawn to be accurate for the UAE and Saudi market, not a generic feature grid. The blue marks are where a platform is native and strong.

What each platform is actually best at.
Shopify
Best for
A UAE or GCC brand selling in English or internationally that wants a bespoke or headless storefront and the biggest app ecosystem, and is willing to assemble regional payments, Arabic, and ZATCA through apps.
Main limit here
Weakest when you are KSA-only and need mada, buy-now-pay-later, and Fatoora working out of the box. Shopify Payments is UAE early access and not supported in Saudi Arabia, so regional stores lean on third-party gateways.
Salla
Best for
A KSA or GCC brand that wants mada, STC Pay, Tabby, Tamara, Apple Pay, Arabic, ZATCA, and local couriers with minimal assembly, and wants to start on a $0 plan with unlimited products.
Main limit here
Weaker for a fully bespoke or headless English global store. The theme engine is capable, but the ecosystem is smaller than Shopify and the center of gravity is the GCC, not global.
Zid
Best for
A KSA retailer that wants Arabic, point-of-sale and omnichannel, mada and buy-now-pay-later, and ZATCA at a low entry cost, with a no-cost Starter tier to begin.
Main limit here
More retail and point-of-sale oriented than Salla, with a smaller, KSA-focused ecosystem. Less suited to a global, English-first, bespoke build than Shopify.
If this is you, pick this.
- If your buyer is international and English-first
- Shopify gives you the reach, the theme control, and the app depth.
- If your buyer is Saudi or Gulf and pays with mada, Tabby, or Tamara
- Salla or Zid make that native, so nothing critical waits on a third-party app.
- If you sell across a shop floor and online
- Zid ties point-of-sale and omnichannel to the store more tightly.
- If you want the widest GCC commerce ecosystem and a $0 start
- Salla is the broader Arabic-first platform.
- If ZATCA e-invoicing has to be handled cleanly from day one
- Salla and Zid are built for it, while Shopify covers it through an app.
Can Shopify take mada and Tabby in Saudi Arabia?
Yes, but not first-party. Shopify has no native mada, STC Pay, Tabby, or Tamara. You add them through third-party gateways and apps such as Telr, PayTabs, Tap, Checkout.com, or Network International, with Tabby and Tamara installed as separate apps. It works, but you are assembling and maintaining the stack yourself. Salla and Zid ship these methods natively.
Which platform supports ZATCA e-invoicing out of the box?
Salla and Zid are built for the Saudi tax environment. Zid has native ZATCA tooling for certifying, signing, QR, and submission, plus marketplace connectors. Salla is VAT and ZATCA ready with connectors available. Shopify has no built-in ZATCA e-invoicing, so you cover it with a third-party app.
I sell in the UAE in English. Which platform is best?
Shopify, in most cases. It is global and English-first, gives you the most theme control including headless builds, and the largest app ecosystem. In the UAE, Shopify Payments is early access for select merchants and online only, so many stores still run a regional gateway. If you need mada, Tabby, Tamara, Arabic, and ZATCA working the day you launch, Salla or Zid will get you there with far less assembly.
Is Salla or Zid better for a Saudi store?
Both are Arabic-first, Saudi-built, and cover mada, Apple Pay, Tabby, and Tamara natively. Salla leans toward broader commerce and a wider merchant ecosystem. Zid leans toward retail with a stronger point-of-sale and omnichannel focus. If you run physical retail alongside the store, Zid is the closer fit. If you want the wider commerce ecosystem, Salla.
What does each platform cost to start?
Salla has a genuine $0 plan with unlimited products and no commission. Zid has a no-cost Starter plan, with paid tiers on the official zid.sa pricing at SAR 99 per month for Launch and SAR 299 per month for Growth. Shopify runs on a monthly subscription starting in the tens of USD, and without Shopify Payments it adds a platform fee on top of your gateway: 2 percent on Basic, 1 percent on Grow, 0.6 percent on Advanced, and 0.2 percent on Plus.
