Merchant Center products get disapproved when the data in your product feed does not match what Google sees on your live landing page, or when a product breaks a Shopping policy. A disapproval blocks the item from Shopping ads and organic Shopping listings until you fix the cause and pass a re-review. Most are fixable in a day once you know which of three levels you are dealing with: an item-level disapproval, an account-level warning, or a full account suspension.

This guide walks through the real causes we see on UAE and Saudi stores, and the exact steps to clear each one.

What is a Merchant Center disapproval?

A disapproval is Google blocking a product from Shopping because it failed a data check or a policy check. It is not a permanent ban. The product keeps its ID and goes live again once the problem is corrected and Google re-reviews it. Disapprovals come in three severities, and confusing them costs people days:

  • Item-level disapproval. One product or a batch is blocked. The rest of your catalog keeps serving. This is the most common and least scary type.
  • Account-level warning. Google has flagged a problem across your account and given you a countdown, often 7 to 28 days, to fix it. Your ads still run during the window. Treat it as the deadline it is.
  • Account suspension. Your entire account is switched off and no product serves. This is what "misrepresentation" usually triggers, and the one worth real care to avoid.

You find all of this in the Diagnostics area of Merchant Center, covered below.

Why is my Merchant Center account suspended for misrepresentation?

Misrepresentation is Google's trust policy. A suspension under it means Google believes your store is not being transparent with shoppers, not that any single product is broken. It is account-level, so everything stops at once, and it is slow to reinstate.

Common triggers:

  • Prices or availability that do not match across the feed, the ad, and the landing page.
  • No clear business identity: missing address, no working phone or email, no company name.
  • Missing or hard-to-find refund, return, and shipping policies.
  • Unsafe checkout: no secure payment, broken cart, or a domain that is not a real store.
  • Inflated or fake "was" prices, resetting countdown timers, or claims you cannot back up.
  • A brand-new domain with thin content and no trust signals.

How to avoid it. Make the store look like a legitimate business to a stranger before you push a feed: publish returns, shipping, and terms pages, show a real address and monitored email, display payment badges, and keep prices honest.

How to appeal it. Open the account issue, read the exact policy cited, fix every item on the list above (not just the one you think caused it), then submit a single review request. Reviews are done by a human and can take several business days, sometimes a week or two, so do not spam re-reviews. If you sell in the UAE or KSA and want a second set of eyes first, our ecommerce PPC team in Dubai reviews these regularly.

How do I fix a missing or invalid GTIN?

A GTIN is the Global Trade Item Number, the barcode identifier (UPC, EAN, or ISBN) Google uses to recognise a branded product. A missing or invalid GTIN disapproval means Google got no GTIN, one with the wrong number of digits, or one whose check digit fails.

Fixes:

  • Branded, manufactured products: find the real GTIN on the packaging or from the manufacturer and put it in the gtin attribute. Do not invent one.
  • Wrong length or failed check digit: GTINs are 8, 12, 13, or 14 digits. A single wrong digit fails validation, so correct any short or mistyped value.
  • Genuinely no GTIN (custom, handmade, or private-label goods with no barcode): set identifier_exists to no and populate brand and mpn instead.
  • Do not reuse one GTIN across variants that each have their own barcode.

How do I fix image disapprovals in Merchant Center?

Image disapprovals happen when the product image breaks Google's rules. Three culprits are usual: promotional overlays, placeholders, and images that are too small.

  • Promotional overlay. Text, logos, watermarks, "SALE", price stickers, or badges burned into the image are not allowed. Use a clean product shot on a plain background and move promo messaging into ad copy.
  • Placeholder or generic image. "Image coming soon", a blank frame, or a stock silhouette gets disapproved. Supply the actual product photo.
  • Too small. Non-apparel images should be at least 100 x 100 pixels and apparel at least 250 x 250, but those are floors. Use a sharp image 1000 pixels or more on the long side to also qualify for better placements.
  • Wrong image. The photo must show the product being sold; a generic category image for a specific SKU is flagged.

Update the image_link to a stable, publicly reachable URL and let Google recrawl.

Why does Google say my price or availability does not match?

This is the single most common item-level disapproval. It means the price or availability in your feed differs from what Google's crawler reads on the product page, and any gap triggers it. The usual causes:

  • Currency or tax mismatch. The feed says AED 199 but the page shows a VAT-inclusive AED 208, or the page is priced in USD. Feed and page must agree, in the same currency and tax treatment.
  • Stale feed. You changed the price on the site but the feed has not refreshed. Raise your fetch frequency or push updates through the Content API.
  • Structured data missing or wrong. Google reads price and availability from the page's schema.org Product markup. Add or correct it if it is absent or contradicts the visible price.
  • Availability drift. The feed says "in stock" but the page shows sold out, or vice versa. Sync your inventory.

The durable fix is automatic item updates: add correct Product structured data so Google reads live price and availability, then keep the feed on a frequent schedule. If your platform makes this hard, our ecommerce development team sets up feeds and structured data that stay in sync.

Do I need a returns and shipping policy?

Yes. Missing return, refund, and shipping information triggers both item disapprovals and misrepresentation-level issues, because Google treats policy transparency as a trust requirement. Shipping is also mandatory data for Shopping ads. What to have in place:

  • A returns and refund policy page: window, condition, who pays return shipping, how refunds are issued.
  • A shipping policy page: destinations, costs, and delivery times.
  • Shipping settings in Merchant Center (or shipping attributes in the feed) so every product has a rate. A product with no shipping data for its destination can be disapproved.
  • Return settings configured where your market supports it.

What contact and trust signals does my site need?

Google wants proof that a real business stands behind the store, so your site needs visible contact details, secure checkout, and honest policies before Shopping trusts it. Thin, anonymous stores are the ones that get suspended.

Checklist:

  • A working contact method: monitored email, phone, or contact form, plus a physical business address.
  • HTTPS across the whole site, including checkout.
  • A secure cart and checkout that actually completes.
  • Consistent business name across site, domain, and payment.
  • Policy pages linked in the footer: returns, shipping, privacy, terms.
  • Payment badges shown at checkout.

How do I fix policy violations for prohibited or restricted products?

Policy disapprovals mean the product itself falls under a prohibited or restricted category, and the fix depends on which. Prohibited items cannot be sold through Shopping at all; restricted items can, with extra conditions.

  • Prohibited (counterfeits, dangerous or recalled goods, weapons, certain regulated substances): remove these from the feed. They will not be approved.
  • Restricted (alcohol, healthcare and medicines, some supplements, adult content, gambling): these need the right setup. Healthcare and pharmacy products often require certification and are limited by country. Check the target market's rules first.
  • Healthcare and editorial claims. Even ordinary products get disapproved for unapproved health claims or prohibited "editorial" content like all-caps spam, gibberish titles, or unreadable descriptions. Rewrite titles and descriptions to be plain, accurate, and without claims.

Fix the attribute or page Google cites, remove anything genuinely prohibited, and resubmit.

How do I use the Diagnostics tab?

The Diagnostics tab lists every current issue, tells you whether it is item-level or account-level, and shows how many products each affects. It is your single source of truth, so start here before changing anything.

How to work it:

  1. Open Products, then Diagnostics (labelled "Needs attention" in newer Merchant Center).

  2. Read the Account issues tab first. Account-level problems and any suspension warning with a countdown outrank everything else.

  3. Move to Item issues and sort by number of products affected so you fix the biggest wins first.

  4. Click an issue to see the exact attribute, example products, and Google's description of the cause.

  5. Fix the root (feed attribute, structured data, or a page), then resubmit the feed or wait for the next fetch.

What are realistic re-review timelines?

Timelines depend on the level, and the right expectation stops people from panicking or spamming appeals.

  • Item-level disapprovals: clear automatically at the next feed fetch or crawl, often within a few hours to three days. No manual appeal needed for data fixes.
  • Account-level warnings: you get a stated window (commonly 7 to 28 days). Fix before it expires; ads keep running until then.
  • Account suspensions: manual human review after you appeal, typically several business days and sometimes one to two weeks. Fix everything, appeal once, wait.

The calm rule: diagnose the level, fix the root cause completely, submit one clean review, give Google time.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a Merchant Center disapproval take to fix?

An item-level data disapproval usually clears within a few hours to three days after you correct the feed or page and Google recrawls. A misrepresentation suspension takes longer because a human reviews it, commonly several business days up to one or two weeks after you appeal.

Can I still run ads while my product is disapproved?

An item-level disapproval blocks only that product; the rest of your catalog keeps serving. An account-level warning keeps ads running until the countdown ends. A full suspension stops everything until the account is reinstated.

What is the difference between a disapproval and a suspension?

A disapproval blocks individual products while the rest of the account works. A suspension switches off the entire account so nothing serves. Disapprovals are usually data problems fixed in the feed; suspensions are trust or policy problems needing a site fix and a manual appeal.

Do I need a GTIN for every product?

No. Branded, manufactured products need their real GTIN. For custom, handmade, or private-label goods with no barcode, set identifier_exists to no and provide brand and mpn instead. Never invent a GTIN, because an invalid one gets disapproved.

Why does Google keep flagging my price as wrong when it looks correct?

Google compares your feed price to the price its crawler reads on the live page, including currency and tax. Common gaps are VAT-inclusive versus exclusive pricing, a stale feed, or missing Product structured data. Align the feed, the visible price, and the markup, then refresh.

How do I avoid a misrepresentation suspension on a new store?

Before pushing a feed, publish returns, shipping, privacy, and terms pages, show a real business name, address, and contact method, run HTTPS with a working checkout, and keep prices honest. Thin, anonymous new domains are the ones Google suspends.
