ROAS is one of the most searched advertising terms in the region. Keyword Planner shows about 1,900 searches a month for "roas" in the UAE and another 1,900 in Saudi Arabia. Most of those people want a simple answer to a simple question: is my ROAS good?
The honest answer is that a good ROAS is the one that makes you money after your costs, and that number is different for every store. This guide explains what ROAS is, how to calculate the ROAS you need to break even, how it differs from POAS and MER, and gives the planning ranges we use for UAE e-commerce by channel.
What is ROAS?
ROAS stands for return on ad spend. It is the revenue your ads generated divided by what you spent on those ads.
ROAS = revenue from ads ÷ ad spend
If you spend AED 10,000 on Google Shopping and the platform attributes AED 40,000 of sales to it, your ROAS is 4, usually written 4x or 400 percent.
Two things to keep in mind:
- ROAS uses revenue, not profit. A 4x ROAS on a product with a 20 percent margin loses money. The same 4x on a product with a 60 percent margin is healthy.
- ROAS depends on attribution. Google, Meta and TikTok each count the sales they believe they influenced, using their own rules. Added together, platforms usually claim more sales than your store actually recorded.
How to calculate your break-even ROAS
Your break-even ROAS is the point where the ads pay for themselves and nothing more. It comes from your gross margin.
Break-even ROAS = 1 ÷ gross margin
Gross margin here should be the share of the selling price left after product cost, delivery, payment fees and expected returns.
| Gross margin after costs | Break-even ROAS |
|---|---|
| 25% | 4.0x |
| 33% | 3.0x |
| 40% | 2.5x |
| 50% | 2.0x |
| 60% | 1.7x |
So a store with a 40 percent margin needs 2.5x just to break even on ads, and needs more than that to cover staff, rent and a profit. A store with a 25 percent margin needs 4x to break even. That is why two stores can have the same ROAS and very different results.
A useful target is your break-even ROAS plus the profit you want per order. Many stores also accept a lower ROAS on first orders when customers come back to buy again, as long as they measure repeat purchases properly.
ROAS vs POAS vs MER
ROAS (return on ad spend) uses revenue per platform or campaign. Good for comparing campaigns and ads inside one platform.
POAS (profit on ad spend) replaces revenue with gross profit. POAS = gross profit from ads ÷ ad spend. A POAS above 1 means the ads returned more profit than they cost. It is a better optimisation target for stores with very different margins across products, and some advertisers feed profit instead of revenue into Google Ads as the conversion value.
MER (marketing efficiency ratio, sometimes called blended ROAS) is total store revenue divided by total marketing spend across all channels. It ignores platform attribution completely, which makes it the most honest check on whether your advertising as a whole is working. If every platform reports a great ROAS but MER is falling, the platforms are sharing credit for the same sales.
We use all three: ROAS inside each platform for day to day decisions, POAS or margin segments to decide what to push, and MER to check the total.
UAE e-commerce ROAS planning ranges
Use these as planning ranges for UAE stores, then replace them with your own data once your account has history. Platform reported ROAS, not store verified.
| Channel | Typical range | Planning midpoint |
|---|---|---|
| Google Search (branded) | 8x to 20x | 12x |
| Google Shopping / Performance Max | 4x to 9x | 6x |
| Meta Advantage+ Shopping | 3x to 6x | 4.5x |
| TikTok Shop / Spark Ads | 2x to 5x | 3.5x |
| Blended (all channels) | 3x to 6x | 4x |
Some context on reading them:
- Branded search looks brilliant because those people were already looking for you. Do not use it to justify spend elsewhere.
- Shopping and Performance Max depend heavily on the product feed. Fix the feed before you change a single bid.
- Meta and TikTok create demand as well as capture it, so part of their value shows up later in search and direct sales. Judge them on MER and new customer numbers as well as their own ROAS.

What real results look like
Two published results from accounts we manage. For Sokkat Al Teeb, a fragrance brand in Saudi Arabia, our campaigns delivered 4.5x return on ad spend. For Koala Picks, a UAE healthy-snack brand, online sales grew 150 percent. See the case studies for the detail.
Neither number is "good" on its own. A ROAS is only good if it clears what the business needs to make money.
How to improve ROAS without killing growth
-
Fix the product feed first. Titles, GTINs, categories, images and prices decide which searches your products appear for.
-
Split products by margin. Give high margin products a lower ROAS target and more room to spend, and low margin products a higher target.
-
Separate branded and non branded traffic so brand searches do not flatter prospecting campaigns.
-
Send purchase values correctly to every platform, with server side tracking, so bidding learns from real revenue.
-
Improve conversion rate. A faster, clearer product page raises ROAS on every channel at once.
-
Watch MER as you scale. ROAS usually falls as spend rises. That is fine if total profit keeps growing.
FAQ
What is a good ROAS for e-commerce in the UAE?
One that is above your break-even ROAS with room for profit. As a planning range, many UAE stores see 4x to 9x on Google Shopping and Performance Max and 3x to 6x on Meta, with blended ROAS of 3x to 6x. Your margin decides which of those numbers is actually good for you.
How do I calculate ROAS?
Divide the revenue attributed to your ads by the amount you spent on those ads. AED 40,000 in sales from AED 10,000 in spend is a 4x ROAS.
What is break-even ROAS?
The ROAS at which ad spend is exactly covered by gross profit. Calculate it as 1 divided by your gross margin after product, delivery, payment and return costs. A 40 percent margin needs 2.5x to break even.
What is the difference between ROAS and MER?
ROAS is measured per platform or campaign using that platform's attribution. MER is total store revenue divided by total marketing spend, so it shows whether all your advertising together is working.
Is a higher ROAS always better?
No. Very high ROAS often means you are only reaching people who would have bought anyway, and spending too little to grow. The goal is the most total profit, which sometimes means accepting a lower ROAS at a higher spend.
Where to start
Work out your break-even ROAS from your real margins, set targets per product group, and compare platform ROAS against your store's MER every month. If platform numbers and store numbers disagree, trust the store.
